Erbil International Airport was established in 2003 on the same site as the old airport, which previously served as a military base under the former regime until 1991. The airport included the fundamental facilities; a passenger terminal, cargo building, aircraft parking areas, and a runway with a (2800) meters length and (30) meters width.
The first commercial flight landed on December 15th, 2003. However, it was officially opened on April 29, 2005 and obtained the ICAO code (ORER) on May 26, 2005.
With the rapid growth of Erbil as a hub for economic, business and tourist activities, the need for a larger and more modern airport became evident. The Kurdistan Regional Government decided to construct a new airport (the current so-called Erbil International Airport) next to the old airport in order to accommodate the increasing number of flights and passengers.
The new Erbil International Airport was designed by the British Scott Wilson Group, and the airport was established by the Turkish Makyol-Cengiz Company in 2005 in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of Construction and Housing. This strategic project was funded by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Featuring a runway length of 4800 meters and a width of 75 meters, Erbil International Airport is among the top ten longest runways in the world. The single passenger terminal has the capacity of serving up to 4,500,000 passengers per year. There is also a CIP Lounge for the first-class/ business-class passengers to ensure a seamless and comfortable travel experience. In addition, it has a separate exclusive VIP terminal to serve dignitaries and diplomatic Figures and also cargo terminal.
At the beginning of 2010, the construction of the new airport was completed, and on September 1, 2010, the transfer from the old airport to the new airport took place without having any impact on flight operation. EIA was officially opened on March 30, 2011 by His Excellency President Masoud Barzani (the president of the Kurdistan Region at that time) and Mr. Rajab Tayyip Erdogan (the Prime Minister of Türkiye at that time).
Currently around 20 airlines operate at Erbil International Airport offering Domestic and International flights to destinations including Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, Dubai, Doha, Sharjah, Cairo, Tehran, Jeddah, Medina, Kuwait, Beirut, Amman, Istanbul, Trabzon, Ankara, Aleppo, Hanover, Vienna, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Amsterdam, Baku, Tbilisi, etc.
During the war with (ISIS), Erbil International Airport played a major role in providing military facilities for the Iraqi Military Aviation and the Coalition Forces.
